FIFA World Cup 98 have a great historical importance in the footballing world because of Jules Rimet, who was involved in founding of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association. R9 exceptional pace, stunning skill, and prolific goal scoring ability has made him the hottest commodity in world football. Ronaldo’s rise to stardom was meteoric, His presence in the Brazilian squad was seen as a game changer, his performances were eagerly anticipated by fans and pundits alike.
While Brazil was the standout favourite, the 1998 World Cup featured several other formidable teams and standout players. France as the host nation possessed a talented squad that had player likes of Zinedine Zidane, Marcel Desailly and Lilian Thuram. This was a shocking turn of events, saw the Germans fall behind to a sublime strike from Robert Jarni in 45+3 mins, and despite their late efforts, Croatia secured a win goals from Vlaovic & Suker that went against odds.
Brazil with their samba inspired football, managed to hold off Denmark in a thrilling match where two goals from Rivaldo proved pivotal. In another quarterfinal in Marseille’s Stade Velodrome, Argentina and the Netherlands engaged in a footballing feast. An early exchange of goals set the stage for a match of flowing football, but Argentina’s Ariel Ortega’s dismissal for butting the chin of Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar altered the course of the game.

Brazil converted all four of their penalties, while misses from Phillip Cocu and Ronald de Boer dashed the Netherlands’ hopes, propelling Brazil into the final.

The grand finale took place at the iconic Stade de France where the host nation, France faced off against the tournament favorites Brazil. This games will go down in football history not only for score but also for the dramatic circumstances that surrounded it.
From the very beginning of the final it was evident that France was not content with merely being on home soil, they were determined to seize the ultimate prize. The French side scored an early goal by their talismanic midfielder Zinedine Zidane, he displayed dominance and confidence on the pitch. Zidane who had been dismissed in an earlier game, had improved steadily as the tournament progressed reaching the final. He was an important and influential figure in the final.
As for Brazil their wonder boy striker, Ronaldo was expected to be the game changer. Ronaldo had emerged as a global footballing sensation with his improbable pace, skill, and goal-scoring ability. However, the final took an unexpected twist as Ronaldo’s name was mysteriously absent from the team-sheet initially provided to the media. In his place Edmundo was listed as the starting striker. Speculation ran rampant as to why the world’s best player was not in the lineup. Rumors suggested that Ronaldo had suffered a fit or a seizure while in his hotel room. His unexplained absence from the team sheet made not only their team mates but also fans of Brazil nerves.
When the teams lined up for kickoff, a visibly nervous Ronaldo was on the pitch. Reports later was said that he had been given a sedative by doctors and that sponsors demanded him to play in the final. Regardless of the circumstances, Ronaldo’s performance reflected a young man in turmoil seemingly not wanting to be playing. This unexpected turn of events left Brazil without their star player at his best.
The French team buoyed by their passionate home support took full advantage of the situation. Despite some errant efforts from striker Stephane Guivarc’h in front of goal, France continued to overpower Brazil. Zidane unmarked on both occasions scored two identical goals from Emmanuel Petit corners Putting the host nation in a commanding position. Brazil struggled to get control of the game, and even though France’s Marcel Desailly was given a red card in 75 min, France finished the game stronger. The icing on the cake was a counter attacking goal from Petit sealing a 3-0 win for France.
World Cup 98 final was a memorable moment for French football, their captain and leader Didier Deschamps lifted the world cup in front of their home fans.
